*the size of mp4s that imgur makes is inconsistent. There are a few possible explanations for that. I'm going to mess around with it some and see whether they're doing anything that affects the actual pixel values, and if so, by how much. I can check it out for this particular animation too if you want, just upload the mp4 you originally made to dropbox or something

uploading it as a giant gif is an interesting workaround, although that limits you to 256 colors at most.

imgur also converts all gifs to the much more size-efficient gifv. i wonder if i can make use of that.

gifv is just an html wrapper that loads an html5 player that loops the mp4 that they converted the gif into. It's just a workaround to get both good compression and looping playback using legacy tech

anyway, I spent entirely too much time fucking with this stuff last night. Imgur will always apply compression to whatever you upload, which makes sense given the site's intended use. I read somewhere that if you have an account you can turn the compression way down from the default, which is set pretty high. I didn't make an account to check. If you upload a gif, you can still get the original gif back, and they don't screw with the width/height in the converted vid if you navigate directly to the .mp4 or .gifv, though obviously they do reduce it on the fly in their embedded player in forums posts and stuff.

interesting stuff. i made an account when i started doing these gifs so i'll check out those options.
