i've been making a shit ton more of these and i'm not bothering to post all of them here. if you want to see the rest of them they're on my tumblr. https://zarbone.tumblr.com/
I'm not posting my new gifs here anymore since I make so goddamn many of them, but this thread was originally supposed to be about learning how to make gifs. I'm continually improving at it and have learned some new techniques recently. I'll make an effort post about it later.
May as well post my current workflow for making these. I'm constantly iterating on this but this is what I do currently.
Pick out something i want to make
Load the episode into Premiere, or rarely, if I'm combining footage from multiple episodes, load em all in.
Do all my editing work in Premiere. This often involves going frame by frame to get the exact look I want.
Export a high quality mpeg (usually 720p) once I'm done editing.
Load the mpeg into Photoshop as a frame animation.
Occasionally, I do additional editing in Photoshop, but that's only in special cases.
Manually consolidate identical or near-identical frames to reduce file size.
Bring up the gif export window.
Adjust palette, number of colors, dithering, transparency, and compression until I get it looking as good as I can while staying under 3 mb. This is sometimes the most difficult and time consuming step.
Export the gif and view it in a browser. Sometimes at this point I'll find stuff I want to revise and go back and change it.
I make so many of these that I don't bother posting most of them here anymore. So here's some highlights from my recent stuff. All gifs are under 3 mb.
I’ve been lurking this thread and felt like I should jump in and be like “nice work and good info!”
ty! if anyone has questions about making gifs don't hesitate to ask. i'm no expert but i'm getting better at it the more i do it so i've got knowledge i can share.
