web snap converts pixels values to web-safe colors, whatever that means. I'm sort of surprised it reduced the filesize. Matte is for making the edges of a non-rectangular image look more smooth against the background of a webpage or whatever that has a known, solid background color the gif will be on top of. So messing with that won't help with filesize optimization for the stuff you're doing.

Thanks for the info on what web snap does. All I know is that for a couple pics, I was able to raise it a bit and get a file size improvement without hurting the image quality much.
